For as long as she can remember, Ashleigh has been fascinated by science. While others were still figuring out what they wanted to do, she was certain she wanted a career in forensic science.
After completing her first year at university, Ashleigh began to explore alternative routes into her dream career. When the opportunity for a Modern Apprenticeship with the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) Forensic Sciences came up, she jumped at the opportunity.

Learning on the job
Originally from Forfar, Ashleigh, 19, started studying Forensic Science at university in Dundee. After finishing her first year, however, she realised that a university setting wasn’t the right fit for her.
“I loved forensics and always knew that’s what I wanted to do, but I didn’t want to spend another three years in a mock environment. I wanted to be hands on and start doing the job.”
When she spotted the Modern Apprenticeship opportunity at Forensic Sciences, she applied, thinking it would be a great interview experience, but ended up securing the role and was delighted.

Ashleigh’s role as a Modern Apprentice is based in the Biology Department and combines one day a week at Dundee and Angus College for her learning. Her Modern Apprenticeship in Life Sciences and Related Science Industries allows her to study subjects such as statistics, microbiology and biomedical techniques, all of which directly support her work.
She has also learned transferable skills through her college studies, from communication and teamwork to problem-solving, all in a context that is specific and relevant to her role. The combination of classroom learning and practical experience whilst working full-time has given Ashleigh a unique perspective on forensic science and the wider industry.
Inside the Forensics Lab
Ashleigh’s role involves supporting lab examiners and maintaining a DNA-free lab environment. Her tasks include preparing cleaning solutions such as Virkon and ensuring that the labs meet strict forensic standards.
“It surprised me how much I enjoy the lab side of things. I always thought I’d prefer being out at the scene, but now I really love being in the lab.”
One of her proudest moments so far was helping coordinate the re-entry process for staff after major lab renovations, a big responsibility early in her apprenticeship.
“I was quite proud of myself for helping organise the schedule after the lab renovations. It was a lot to take on and I’ve learned through that experience how determined and capable I am.”
Through these tasks, she has gained first-hand work experience, an understanding of how the company operates and inside knowledge of the industry, which is invaluable for her career.

Support Along the Way
Ashleigh credits much of her success to the guidance and support she has received along the way.
“Everyone has been so supportive. I know I can always ask questions to my mentor or line manager and I never feel like I’m on my own.”
Her apprenticeship has also allowed her to grow connections with her team, improving her communication and teamwork skills while learning how a professional forensic laboratory operates.
She has also participated in wellbeing initiatives at Forensic Sciences, including supporting local charities such as Andy’s Men Club and Maggie’s. These experiences reinforce that a Modern Apprenticeship is a purposeful way to learn real-life skills and contribute meaningfully to a professional environment.
Looking to the future
Since starting her apprenticeship, Ashleigh’s confidence has grown hugely. She has learned how every small role contributes to the bigger picture of forensic work, confirming that this is the career path she wants to follow.

“I’ve learned so much more than I ever would have in the classroom. I get to see how everything fits together and it’s really opened my eyes to how much goes into forensic work. I’m so excited to be a part of it.”
Looking ahead, Ashleigh hopes to continue developing her skills and progress towards an advanced role in forensic science, building a career she has been passionate about since she was a child.
