A new Modern Apprenticeship is helping to create exciting career opportunities in one of Scotland’s fastest-growing industries.
Developed by Dundee & Angus College in partnership with Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS), the bespoke apprenticeship has been designed specifically to meet the needs of the controlled-environment vertical farming sector, giving apprentices the opportunity to learn while working in a real production environment.
Supported by Science Futures, the new apprenticeship enables learners to apply each unit directly to production within a controlled environment, building practical skills in crop growing and harvesting and developing competence in plant protection. Over the 18 month programme, apprentices will also gain experience in health and safety, working safely on site and the safe use of equipment and machinery, all while earning and building confidence in the workplace.
Delivered on-site at IGS, the programme allows apprentices to learn on the job and gives them the time to complete assessments and build confidence whilst still earning in their role. This approach gives learners valuable hands-on experience while helping IGS develop the skilled workforce needed for the future.
The first cohort of four apprentices has now started their journey, marking an exciting step forward in developing the next generation of talent for the industry. As part of their apprenticeship, they’ll work towards gaining a SCQF Level 5 Diploma in Horticulture qualification.
By working alongside employers such as IGS, Science Futures – a project funded by the Scottish Government through the Tay Cities Region Deal Skills and Employability Programme – is helping education and industry work together to create opportunities for learners while strengthening the talent pipeline for Scotland’s growing agritech sector.
